(pronounced: wig-a-buug)
Wigapu'g is a Mi'kmaq word that means "tastes good!" When deciding on the best name in presenting these extraordinarily flavorful oysters to the world, we couldn't have chosen a more precise, yet appropriate word. Our customers continually tell us how phenomenal they are noting specifically, the balance between salty and sweet tastes with hints of hazelnut, while offering a full and firm flesh.
We also would like to tell you a little more about our logo design, which incorporates not only the image of the oyster, but also tells the story of the area where they are harvested but also the cultural heritage from which they are sourced.
We've intentionally kept the logo in black and white, choosing to focus on the strength of the product, which flavor speaks for itself. Building on that sentiment, the oyster is the prominent feature. However, we'd like to draw your attention to the setting sun on the flowing river within the oyster. Not only does this refer to where the product is from, but specifically, the Richibucto river. Richibucto is another Mi'kmaq word which means "River of Fire". While the river is ideal in it's coolness and nutrient tidal richness to produce these exquisite shellfish, the setting sun literally ignites the mirrored surface with flaming hues of fire, creating the most stunning sunsets of any body of water in the world. Finally, this is all overlaid on top of the circle and feathers of the Mi'maq medicine wheel. The medicine wheel is culturally significant in that because it is a circle, it represents the many cycles that appear in the natural world: the cycle of night and day, of the seasons, and of birth, life, and death.
Farmed at the mouth of the pristine Richibucto "River of Fire" where fast tidal turnover from the adjacent Northumberland straight create an environment that is rich in biodiversity and natural nutrients. This unique combination of naturally occurring conditions create oysters that are a premium product characterized by their plump shape, slightly iodized and sweet flavor reminiscent of the best Mediterranean clams. The River of Fire Oyster is highly prized for it's amazing flavor profile!
Our Oysters come to you from Indian Island First Nations aquamarine farm. Holding to our First Nations tradition of harvesting and farming shellfish and adapting the most advanced eco-friendly technologies available, our aquaculture farm utilizes the OysterGro technique which substantially increases the oyster growth rates and long-term sustainability of the oyster farm. The OysterGro grow technique is superior to other growing techniques because it allows for the oysters to feed off natural nutrients in the water, so they do not require feeding and ensures that crisp freshness in our Oysters natural flavor.
Our oysters are marketed fresh year-round in North American and around the globe. Food safety is assured through the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program (CSSP), which meets some of the highest standards in the world and is intended to protect consumers in domestic and international markets.
